Petrignani Palace

Petrignani Palace
Petrignani Palace rises with its imposing façade over the ancient Platea Major, the political and social heart of medieval life. Its main entrance-never completed-opens onto today's Piazza Marconi, which is why visitors now enter exclusively through the secondary entrance on Via Duomo.
Built in the second half of the 16th century, the palace is an outstanding example of late Renaissance architecture. Although owned by Bartolomeo Petrignani, it was commissioned and financed by his brother Fantino.
The family rose rapidly thanks especially to Monsignor Fantino, Archbishop of Cosenza, maestro di casa to Pope Gregory XIII, Vice-Legate of Bologna, Apostolic Nuncio in Naples, and one of the protectors of the young Caravaggio.
The works were entrusted to papal architect Ottavio Mascarino, a pupil of Vignola, who served the Petrignani family for 18 years.
Today only the piano nobile is open to visitors, featuring eight frescoed rooms painted by two different artistic schools. The rich decoration follows a complex iconographic program celebrating the splendor of the Petrignani lineage.
The frescoes-long attributed to the Zuccari school-are now more convincingly assigned to the school of Tarquinio Racani, an artist from Amelia who also painted other palaces and churches in the city.
The most striking room is the Zodiac Hall, where twelve lunettes depict the months of the year, each bearing its corresponding zodiac sign.
The decorative scheme is consistent throughout the palace: at the center of each ceiling is a large panel illustrating historical events, surrounded by elaborate grotesque motifs.
Other notable rooms include the Chapel, the Ante-Chapel, the Hall of Constantine and Maxentius, the Albornoz Hall, the Heraclius Hall, the Somaschi Hall, and the Strigonia Hall.
