Town of Bettona

Town of Bettona

Bettona, also known as the "Etruscan Belvedere", is an ancient Umbrian village located on a hill of the Martani Mountains, in the province of Perugia, at about 350 meters above sea level, offering a splendid view of the Umbra Valley.

The village lies just a few kilometers from Perugia, easily reachable from the SS75 state road and well connected to the surrounding Umbrian towns such as Bastia Umbra, Assisi, Cannara, Collazzone, Deruta, and Torgiano, making it a strategic point both historically and today for tourism.

Its origins date back to the Etruscan era, when it was known as Vettona, a strategic settlement on the left bank of the Tiber, controlled by the powerful city of Perugia. In 90 Before Christ it obtained Roman citizenship, entering the Empire's administrative network.

After the barbarian invasions, it became an autonomous municipality in the 12th century, but in 1352 it was conquered and destroyed by Perugia after a long siege.

Its rebirth came in 1367 thanks to the Church and Cardinal Albornoz, who promoted its reconstruction. After a brief return under the Papal States, Bettona once again fell under Perugian rule, particularly under the Baglioni family, until it definitively rejoined the Papal States in 1648, remaining there until the Unification of Italy in 1860.

Today Bettona still preserves important traces of its past: sections of the ancient Etruscan walls are perfectly visible and incorporated into the medieval fortifications, while the historic center is dominated by Piazza Cavour and Piazza Garibaldi, Palazzo del Podestà, and the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, rebuilt in the 13th century.

The surrounding area features remains of Etruscan necropolises-particularly in the Colle locality-and the route of the ancient Via Amerina, the Roman road connecting the Umbrian towns.

Despite its small size, Bettona is today a lively and well-preserved village, combining history, art, and landscape.
