Town of Montefalco

Town of Montefalco
Montefalco stands on a hill surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, with a view overlooking the valleys of the Topino and Clitunno rivers. Thanks to its panoramic position, since 1568 it has been known as the "Balcony of Umbria".
On clear days, you can enjoy 360-degree views from various observation points, stretching across the valley between Perugia and Spoleto and reaching the Sub-Apennines and the Martani Mountains.
According to tradition, the name Montefalco was given by Frederick II of Swabia, who in the 13th century, struck by the large number of falcons in the area, decided to change its ancient name, Coccorone.
Over time falcons became increasingly rare, but on July 31, 2007, a pair of kestrels was released to encourage their return to the area. The project was highly successful, and these birds of prey have begun breeding in the region once again.
